What can I take after I’ve had my gums cut by a Periodontist(dentist)?

I’m on my way to the dentist and I know the whole procedure with "gum cutting" but I’m very sensitive to pain and I know that the aftermath will involve some pain. I need to know what the take/gargle to get rid or decrease the pain. Thanks!

Don’t worry! for the entire procedure, you will be numbed up really well and won’t feel a thing. And then when you are done with the procedure, you will probably get a prescription for a mouth rinse. usually your Perio will write for a chlorhexidine mouth rinse that will kill the germs and prevent infection.

If you ask, your Perio may write a script for a couple painkillers for you. This will depend on how extensive the work is and how willing he is to write for drugs like that. If you don’t get one, don’t worry, you should be fine on a hi dose of ibuprofin. Ask him about dosing that, and you’ll be just fine.

Good luck! don’t worry, I’ve had a couple oral surgeries with my Perio and they really arn’t bad. Most recently I had a bone graft, and I only ever used 3 of the vicodin I was written for; the next day I felt fine with low dose percocet. And a bone graft is a way more invasive procedure than getting your gums contoured. If you have any more questions, just ask them and I will be happy to answer!

  1. Talk to the dentist. I’m sure he/she can either give you something or write you a prescription. Be thankful that our mouths are the second-fastest part of our bodies to heal (the fastest are our eyes).

I’ve had oral surgery a few times and have talked to my Perio (and general DDS) about all these things.
