What do you eat after you have a major dental surgery and can barely move your jaw afterward?
My husband is getting ready to have surgery on his jaw and we’re not sure what he can eat. The doctor said he won’t have much room to move his mouth after it’s done. It’s not gonig to be wired shut or anything but he’s supposed to have very limited movement.
Is there some sort of list of what to feed patients in this case?
We’ve been considering carnation instant breakfast and soups but want to make sure he’s eating as healthy as possible. Thanks for your help!
Smoothies are good:
1 cup orange juice
1 cup strawberry yogurt (if he’s not allergic)
1 cup frozen strawberries (you can freeze fresh ones in a ziploc bag the night before)
Blend in a blender until smooth. You can add a spoonful of sugar if your berries are a little sour.
SOUPS:
Potato, Garbanzo bean, and Spinach soup:
Peel, chop, and boil potatoes in about 2-3 cups of water. When potatoes are soft, add 1 can of drained garbanzo beans and salt and pepper to taste. Mash real well. Stir in a bag of frozen chopped spinach. (SO he doesn’t have to chew too much.)
Zuchini celery soup:
Peel and chop 1/2 yellow onion. Add 1 cup chopped celery and stir fry in olive oil until onion is translucent. Peel and chop 1-2 small zuchini and add to frying pan. Saute for a few minutes. Add salt and pepper, 2 cups water or chicken broth, bring to a boil, simmer until celery is soft. Mash real well, or pour into a good blender and blend until smooth. In a separate cup mix 1 cup milk (I use rice milk for my allergies) and 2 tablespoons corn starch, pour into pot. Stir until soup is thick.
Roasted Pepper dip (Or soup if you add water or cream and corn starch to thicken)
Core and de-seed 4-5 big Red, Orange, or Yellow ripe bell peppers with thick flesh. Peel and cut in half 1 yellow onion. You could roast a few cloves of garlic but put them in 1/2 way through. Put onto baking tray, drizzle olive oil over, and roast at 450 degrees 35 minutes in oven or follow broiler directions and broil until peppers skins are blackened. Remove from oven or broiler and cool.
When cool, peel peppers and put them in a blender. Add the onion and garlic and 1/2 cup olive oil and blend until smooth. At this point you could keep this a dip, or put into pot and bring to a boil, add 1 cup milk or cream plus 1 tablespoon cornstarch for a cream of roasted bell pepper soup. It’s awesome either way.
Applesauce is always good. So are those fruit cups and strawberry sauce cups they sell in the fruit section. ANd don’t forget Mashed potatoes. A good baked sweet potato with butter is different and will give vitamins besides starch.
you should probally start with milkshakes,pudding,jello and ice cream and then gradually add oatmeal,mashed potatoes,and eggs,also creamed soups are good …hope it goes well
