Sedation dentistry and periodontal disease?

I think I might have periodontal disease, and I’m freaking out. I have an extreme phobia of the dentist, and haven’t been in about 12 years! I assume I’ll have to get a deep cleaning/scaling/planing done, and I am terrified. I have been considering sedation dentistry, the asleep kind of sedation (iv), not the conscious sedation (laughing gas), although I admit I’m a little weary of being completely knocked out. Anyone have any experience with any of this?

IV Sedation at the dentist is NOT being knocked out. You think you are, but you aren’t. After they give the IV you feel like you just fell asleep and woke up instantly in a recovery room but that’s just how you feel. You’re actually awake and aware of what they are doing during the entire procedure but remember absolutely nothing about it.

I am getting cavities filled on Monday. I am very VERY petrified of needles and do not want a shot(s) in my gums. So I am getting Sedation Dentistry done. I have not been in 2 years.

I have read some things online about it. But has anyone experienced this before?

-Do you feel any pain during or after the work has been done? Like I said its probably 2 or 3 cavities if I had to guess.

-Am I going to wake up nauseous? Feeling bad?

-And anything else you can tell me about sedation dentistry would be fantastic. I really am scared of the dentist and needles. Thanks for all your help in advance.

Sedation dentistry can be performed by using IV sedation or by premedicating with a combination of drugs. Either way you will be in a twilight state and will feel nothing and will remember nothing. You will not be nauseous afterward. Good luck

Sedation Dentistry on Monday. Questions. PLEASE HELP?

The drug most commonly used for sedation dentistry is Midazolam, administered via intravenous injection.

Midazolam is a powerful sedative related to Valium, which also reduces anxiety and has amnestic (amnesia-inducing) effects. So chances are you wont remember the procedure.

I am terrified of the dentist & I want to sleep through the process of my root canal. is that a good idea? is it expansive?

I think it is expensive if you don’t have insurance. I don’t and they are going to put me to sleep. It is going to cost me around almost $500 for that. Well at least thats what my bill says. I think it just depends on whether or not you have insurance and also the dentist you are dealing with. You should go see them and get an exam and x-rays then they can give you an estimate of how much everything will cost. Trust me it is worth it and you will know the cost way ahead of time before any treatment begins.

Also don’t be scared. They might not even have to do a root canal so don’t get worked up over nothing. You might just need a filling and if you do need a root canal it probably won’t be so bad. I have heard lots of people say it doesn’t hurt so much. I am terrified of the dentist too but I have to get my wisdom teeth pulled out soon. I understand how you are feeling but don’t worry just remember that it’s for the best…you only have one set of teeth after all!

Sedation Dentistry is a God Send?

i needed two dental fillings for a year now and i have put it off because i am terrified of needles not the actual dental work, so my dentist finally talked me into booking a sedation appointment, and it was great i got a little very easy injection in the arm then sedation medication was pumped into my body, the next thing i know i see my dentist putting the injections in my mouth i just didn’t care, i have now finished my treatment and i am very happy, i think sedation dentistry is great.

what are your views

I am dental-phobic and have had teeth removed and fillings done under sedation. It certainly works for me!

Sedation Dentistry? Anybody Done It? Experiences, Please!?

Hi folks! I need some dental work done, and I am afraid! I’ve been reading about "sedation dentistry," and I want to know if any of you had experiences with it. If so, do you mind sharing it? Was it safe? Was it effective? Did you feel anything or remember anything? On average, what was the cost? Thanks!

Not all dentists will be licensed to do sedation – you can ask your dentist if he/she is and if they are not they will be able to refer you. Generally unless the dentist feels that the work will be particularly troublesome or lengthly then you will not be referred for general anesthetic, however you could have IV sedation [intravenous - a needle in the arm that makes you very drowsy] or RA sedation [relative analgesia - i.e gas and air!] at our practice we charge £120 for sedation on top of any charge for the dental work needing to be done! I havn’t experience either first hand so I can’t tell you how they felt – but if you have IV sedation you must remain at the practice for at least half an hour after treatment [all in all you should be there for at least an hour depending on how long the work takes], have someone collect you and must not drive/use household products like irons or kettles or sign any legal documents for 24 hours after sedation. RA sedation, you will be kept at the practice until you are fully round from the sedation [about 15 minutes] and then are free to go as RA does not impair your abilty to do things! Both types of sedation are completely safe and you won’t remember a thing afterwards! Hope this helped and good luck!
