Gum Disease, or Periodontal Disease is a general term for bacterial infection that affects the gum tissue and bone that support the teeth in your mouth. Gum Disease, if left untreated, can cause pain in the mouth, bad breath, and may eventually even lead to tooth loss.

Gum Disease is caused by a build up of plaque on the teeth. Plaque is that disgusting, yellow stuff on your teeth that is full of bacteria. It is essential that you floss and brush your teeth everyday to remove the plaque.

Besides plaque, your lifestyle can cause gum disease. Your body’s immunity system must be strong. Exercising throughout the day and eating healthy is the best way to keep your immunity strong. But if you are unable to exercise throughout the day and a healthier menu is not available to you, you should try to stay away from sugars and starches. We all know sugar is bad for our teeth but starchy foods such as french fries feed the acids that eat away at your teeth’s enamel. Also, it is important to make sure you get enough sleep every night. Also stress can contribute to a lower immunity level.

Unfortunately for all you women out there, you all are at a higher risk for gum disease. Due to changes in hormones during puberty, menopause and pregnancy, the tissues in your body become more sensitive and that includes your gum tissue. Also as reported in the Journal of Periodontology, there is a risk that women who are pregnant and have some form of Periodontal Disease are more likely give birth pre-term or the babies may be born with low birth weight.

One of the more significant causes of gum disease is also the easiest to avoid. Tobacco, both smoking and chewing is horrible for your health. Besides causing cancer, lung disease and heart disease, tobacco directly affects the gum and lead to gum disease. The best way to avoid it is to never start, but if you already smoke, it is never too late to quit.

If you diagnosed with Periodontal/Gum Disease, your oral hygienist may suggest a form of periodontal surgery if your Gum Disease has progressed to a more severe stage.

Should I get a second periodontist opinion?

Friday, March 5th, 2010

I went today and I was told that I needed a scaling and root planting. The step after that may be bone grafting for one of my teeth. Potential out of pocket may be about $500 since my insurance caps. Should I get a second opionion on the bone grafting (I know that I need the scaling and rooting)? Are second opinions form periodontists typically recommended?

Periodontist. YES
It’s got to be the hardest specialty to be in. I’ve sent several patients to a periodontist. One yelled at my patient for breaking her perfect attendance schedule. The other one I reffered for a specific problem and the periodontist required a Scaling and root planing even though it was an isolated pocket. two years later the patient returned to my office with the problem untreated. Every time I send a patient to the periodontist it takes ages to get them back in for a check up.

Ever consider your dentist was trying to get rid of you?
