4 year old afraid to go back to dentist.?

My 4 year old told me that at his last dental visit, the dentist put his hand over my son’s mouth because he wouldn’t stop crying. At this pediatric dentistry, the parents aren’t allowed to go in the back with the kids. At first, I thought he was just saying it to avoid going back, but now I truly think this has happened. I canceled his appointment and now looking for a different dentist. My question is has anyone else experience something similar like this with their child?

This is not done to cut off the child’s air supply as their nose is not covered. But often, the child is crying or screaming so loudly, that this is the only way a dentist can calmly get through to the child by talking to them. It is not an abusive technique and is a last means of attempting to communicate with and calm down the child. Otherwise you are talking about forced dentistry with a papoose board and mouth props, or putting the child out with IV or general anesthetic.

I want to go to a dental school, what type of major would I need?

I am attending a university right now, trying to get my B.S. in Dental Hygiene… I do too want to go further… I would want to enter school of dentistry to become Pediatric dentist.

You can get in with any major as long as you fulfill the prerequisite classes. Dental Hygiene is a good one because you can always be a dental hygienist if you don’t go to dental school. One of my friends who went to dental school was a biochemistry major and another one was a Spanish and biology major. And another one was a chemistry major. You just need 1 yr of chem, bio, ochem, physics. And then some math classes and maybe biochemistry. My cousin who is an oral surgeon majored in chemistry.

College admissions help!?

I’m a junior in high school. I want to be a Pediatric Dentist. I plan on going to Ball State University for my general studies and majoring in Pre-Dental. Admissions criteria for University of Kentucky’s Pediatric Dentistry program includes a D.M.D. or D.D.S. from an accredited college of dentistry. My question is this: After acquiring my degree in Pre-Dental, am I eligible to transfer to UK for the Pediatric Dentistry program?

OK…I did a little digging and here is what I think…

First, I congratulate you on thinking ahead to your future!

~ Once you complete Ball State, you will have a Bachelor’s Degree.

~ Sometime during your junior or senior year at Ball State, you need to apply for admission to the University of Kentucky into their D.M.D. program (their "regular" dental program).

~ THEN, once you are in THAT program (or another dental program at any other University) and getting close to finishing that program, then you would apply for the Pediatric Dental Program at the University of Kentucky.

So, you are looking at 8+ years of schooling PRIOR to getting into the Pediatric Dental Program at the University of Kentucky (a Bachelor’s Degree AND a D.M.D. or D.D.S. degree). Basically, the Pediatric Dentistry program is a Ph.D. program.
